CAPE TOWN - Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Mmusi Maimane says there isn't enough room in Parliament for President Jacob Zuma and the Constitution.

The DA called on MPs across the political spectrum to support its motion for the president's impeachment.

The party would need the backing of two-thirds of MPs in the National Assembly to remove the sitting president for a serious violation of the Constitution or the law.

In a unanimous judgment yesterday, the Constitutional Court found that not only the president, but also Parliament, had failed to uphold and defend the Constitution in dealing with the Nkandla issue.

The official opposition believes this is an impeachable offence.

"Should Parliament fail to remove Jacob Zuma, we will take any and all necessary actions that we need to take," Maimane said.

He has asked ANC MPs not to use their collective muscle as the majority in Parliament to defend Zuma.

He says ANC MPs should remember their oath as members of Parliament to uphold the Constitution.

Maimane also says Speaker Baleka Mbete needs to resign, for complicity in the Nkandla scandal, warning her proximity to Zuma is clouding her judgement.

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) took Zuma to the Constitutional Court for failing to act on the Public Protector's remedial action, as set out in her report on the upgrades to the president's private home.

The DA then joined the legal action.
