JOHANNESBURG - The South African Music Awards will see a few new changes - with Durban announced as the official host for this year's ceremony.

The show, which is usually held at the Sun City Super Bowl near Rustenburg, will take place at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre (ICC) in June.

Chairperson Refiloe Ramogase says while the Super Bowl is under refurbishment and unavailable, this is an opportunity for the awards to reach a wider audience.

"We saw this as an opportunity to really be true to the fact that we have a South African Music Awards as opposed to a 'provincial music awards'. We want to try and have an approach which sees elements of the awards being hosted in different provinces. For example the nominee announcement will be in a different province to the main awards show."

As part of the organising team's long term goals, different municipalities will be asked to host an array of events before the main show, including gala dinners and public viewings.

Ramogase has dismissed claims that a R46 million budget was set aside for the awards.

"That is a misquote. I can definitely tell you that we have not received that type of financial aid from any province. The fact of the matter is that our funding sources are multiple. We would love to have R46 million to spend in only one calendar year, but that is not the case."

He has promised a world class show and encouraged the public to attend the event in their numbers.

Tickets are expected to go on sale just before the nominee's announcement next month.

Nominees for the 22nd SAMAs will be made in April. Who are you looking forward to seeing nominated? #DurbanSAMA
