CAPE TOWN - The Bonteheuwel Joint Peace Forum says residents are being held hostage in their homes, as gun battles between rival gangs continue in the area.

The forum's Judy Kennedy claims at least five people were shot dead over the Last five days.

Police have only confirmed three fatal shootings since the Easter long weekend.

Scores of residents have taken to the Bonteheuwel Gangwatch Facebook page, warning one another about flare-ups and which areas to avoid.

Late last night, one woman said she heard what sounded like a machine gun going off.

Kennedy says residents are fearful.

"It was extremely bad yesterday again; I think about five lives were lost, yesterday alone. Last night we were back to the war zone that we had last Sunday."
