At least 25 people left homeless after Strand shack fire

CAPE TOWN - At least 25 people have been left homeless due to a shack fire in Strand this Easter weekend.

Nine structures were gutted when a blaze broke out in Nomzamo yesterday.

The cause of the fire is still unknown.

Cape Town Fire and Rescue's Theo Layne said, "Just before 2pm yesterday afternoon we responded to a call in Nomzamo where we had nine informal structures that were destroyed. They left approximately 25 people distressed with no injuries or fatalities. The cause of the fire is undetermined at this stage."

Humanitarian relief is expected to be delivered to the area today.

Disaster Risk Management's Charlotte Powell said, "[We will provide them with] Hot meals, blankets, clothing and food parcels. Emergency shelter we have not activated because the residents prefer to stay with family and friends."
