'High ranking' govt official arrested after fleeing accident scene

The govt official faces four charges, including drunk driving & resisting arrest.

CAPE TOWN - A government official was arrested after he allegedly tried to flee the scene of an accident.

The man was apprehended on the N7 yesterday afternoon.

He faces four charges, including drunk driving and fleeing the scene of an accident.

The City of Cape Town's JP Smith says the suspect is a high-ranking official in the national Department of Transport.

"He collided with the vehicle and drove away from the accident scene. He was arrested on the N7 towards Malmesbury. He is currently being detained at Milnerton Saps on a docket for reckless and negligent driving, drunk driving, fleeing the scene of an accident and resisting arrest. Nobody was injured in the motor vehicle accident."
