‘Kathrada Foundation & ANC on same page on Gupta matter’
The ANC said it would investigate claims the Guptas have been offering members positions in Cabinet.
JOHANNESBURG - Tourism Minister Derek Hanekom says he believes members of the African National Congress' (ANC) National Executive Committee (NEC) and the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation that he chairs want the same thing for South Africa, when it comes to dealing with claims around the controversial Gupta family.
Yesterday, the minister signed a letter as chair of the foundation that demanded the ANC take action on the claims, saying history will judge it harshly if it doesn't act.
Last night, the party said it would investigate claims the Guptas have been offering ANC members positions in Cabinet so long as they agreed to certain conditions.
Hanekom was in the NEC meeting yesterday when three foundations, including the foundation he chairs, sent a letter to ANC Secretary General Gwede Mantashe.
The letter says the ruling party must act on these claims and change direction.
Hanekom says he stands by that, but he won't say what actually happened in that meeting.
"Of course history will judge any organisation or any government that doesn't do the right things. Our message is simply, as a foundation - and of course the ANC would not be opposed to that message - I'm member of the NEC and we want the best for our country."
He says he believes the NEC does want to do the right thing in reacting to claims the Gupta family have been offering people Cabinet posts.

The NEC said yesterday people with claims to make must speak to the party's secretary general.
Hanekom says there's no difference between what the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation wants and what the ANC's NEC wants.
"We want a government of high integrity, we want to combat all forms of corruption; all forms of abuse of power should be combatted and fought against. We believe that society as whole should stand up against the things that are wrong."
Yesterday the ANC's NEC said it reaffirms its full faith in President Jacob Zuma.

But it also says it will undertake a comprehensive investigation of these claims around the Gupta family, before taking action.
