Farmworker's death prompts calls for action

JOHANNESBURG - The death of a 21-year-old farmworker in the Free State has prompted calls for action to ensure the safety of labourers who work under dangerous conditions.
It's understood the young man fell into a food mixer at a farm near Petrusburg on Saturday and died from his injuries.
The South African National Civic Organisation has called on the Labour Department to investigate the circumstances around the accident.
The organisation's Jabu Mahlangu has urged authorities to investigate whether occupational health and safety plans where followed.
"Not enough is being done because obviously we're aware, and not directly from the labour point of view, but even from the police point of view that in the farming communities - even in certain instances police are not allowed to come in to those spaces."
