Meet the new Miss SA 2016

JOHANNESBURG - Ntandoyenkosi Kunene has been crowned as Miss South Africa 2016.

Kunene, a 23-year-old education honours student from Mpumalanga, said she was determined to make a difference during her reign.

She said, "As a little girl growing up in the township - modelling around the house and practicing my speech in front of the mirror - I had always hoped, prayed and believed that one day my name would be called as the new Miss South Africa."

The 2016 Miss South Africa pagaent took place at Carnival City on the East Rand tonight.

The event saw 12 finalists from across the country compete for the crown along with R2 million worth of prizes.

Tayla Skye was named as second princess and Elizabeth Molapo as the first princess.

TV personality Sophie Ndaba and writer Kojo Bafoe were part of the panel of judges.

They said they were looking for someone who will to represent the country on the international stage.

The new Miss SA said she is delighted because she has the opportunity to give back to her nation.

"To inspire little girls like myself to have big dreams; to be a beacon of hope to the hopeless and to encourage young women to work tirelessly towards their goals, dreams and ambitions."

As the winner, Kunene has won cash, a car and products valued at more than R2 million among other things.

Outgoing Miss SA Liesl Laurie said she has enjoyed her reign.
