GP transport dept hopes legislature clears historical debt
The department faced the provincial legislature’s Public Accounts Committee today.
JOHANNESBURG - The Gauteng Transport Department says it hopes the legislature will clear its historical unauthorised expenditure of just over R150 million.
The department faced the provincial legislature's Public Accounts Committee today, explaining how exactly it had overspent between 2005 and 2011
For the financial period of 2005 and 2006 alone, it exceeded its budget by R17 million.
While the good news is the department hasn't overspent its budget in the past three years, it still has to account for money used in the past.
Department Chief Executive Officer Sanele Zondo says a little over R150 million in over expenditure is still noted in the department's records.
"As you implement your projects, you could find yourself without the necessary cash to pay for those projects because you have paid the money out in 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009 and in 2011 and 2012."
Zondo says if the committee doesn't approve the historic unauthorised expenditure - the department will have to look at cutting back on some road projects.
