Taxi driver arrested after knocking police officer down
A City of Cape Town traffic official says the taxi driver ignored his call to stop and instead knocked him.
CAPE TOWN - A taxi driver has been arrested after allegedly knocking over a traffic officer on the N2 yesterday.
The officer sustained minor injuries after he attempted to pull over the taxi.
The City of Cape Town's JP Smith said, "A traffic officer stopped the taxi for overtaking in the shoulder lane on the N2. As the driver was trying to escape being pulled over, he knocked the officer down and drove away.
"Members of the police squad then spotted the vehicle and he was arrested and taken to Nyanga police station."
Earlier this month, a City of Cape Town traffic official died in a collision involving a minibus taxi on Jakes Gerwel Drive.
Mogamat Faried Galant (35) was en route to the Hillstar Traffic Department when a taxi driver lost control of his vehicle and collided with Galant in the opposite lane.
Four other cars were involved in the accident.
In the Eastern Cape the Hawks are investigating the murder of a police officer.
Warrant Officer Mzwanele Tukani was killed on Friday during an operation with the Mthatha Stock Theft Unit.
The police's Mzukisi Fatyela said, "At this stage no arrests have been made, but we've opened up a case of murder which the Hawks are investigating."
