JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi says for the first time in the country's history, parents will be able to apply for new school admissions for their children in Gauteng online.

The province is doing away with the paper admission system and long queues for applications to public schools next year.

Lesufi says the new admission date for next academic year has been gazetted and will start from 1 April until 7 September this year.

He says his department also acknowledges that not all parents have access to a computer.

But officials will be deployed to provincial and district offices to help with online applications.

The MEC has called on parents not to wait until the last minute, to ensure that the first online application process is successful.

He also says more pupils have been admitted to Gauteng's schools this year with 90,000 of them coming from other provinces.
