EFF stages a walkout over alleged protection of the Guptas

JOHANNESBURG - The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has walked out of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature during a question and answer session, saying speaker Lentheng Mekgwe is defending the African National Congress (ANC) and the Guptas.

Premier David Makhura and MECs are answering questions from members of opposition parties.

Questions around the Gupta family in provincial government have so far dominated the EFF's questions.

One by one, EFF members in the house asked a number of MECs whether they have awarded tenders to Gupta-owned companies, including advertising in The New Age and on Africa News Network7 (ANN7).

Then proceedings were disrupted after Health MEC Qedani Mahlangu answered a question about the rebuilding of a West Rand clinic, which was burnt down by residents in 2013.

The EFF's Mandisa Mashego claimed the MEC implied the party had something to do with inciting arson.

An argument broke out with Mekgwe, and Mashego was then told she would not be able to take part in the rest of the session.

The EFF then walked out and proceedings are now continuing as normal.
