Stellenbosch University hit by violent overnight protests

Demonstrators started fires in a protest believed to be against the outsourcing of workers.

CAPE TOWN - Violent protests erupted last night at Stellenbosch University. Demonstrators started fires in a protest believed to be against the outsourcing of workers.

When Eyewitness News arrived at the university, about 20 people, some with bandanas, were standing in front of the admin building B building.

One protester said they're angry because management has not engaged disgruntled workers this week.

Earlier in the day, police had arrested one of the protesting workers after the group occupied an economics building.

It's unclear whether the workers were involved in last night's demonstrations.
