Calls for EThekwini mayor to explain proposed spending of R6,4m on events
The municipality will spend R3.7 million to have American rappers TI and Nicki Minaj perform in Durban.
JOHANNESBURG - There have been calls for EThekwini mayor James Nxumalo to explain in Parliament a proposed spending of R6.4 million on various entertainment events.
This week, the municipality made headlines when it was revealed that it would be spending R3.7 million to have American rappers TI and Nicki Minaj perform in Durban over the next week.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) says the latest expenditure on the concerts, a Durban picnic day worth R2.3 million and R450,000 for a delegation to travel to a tourism dinner and breakfast in Australia is 'frivolous'.
It says Nxumalo should rather look at spending the money on basic areas of service delivery including water.
DA spokesperson Kevin Mileham said, "It does little to contribute to service delivery and does little to help the municipality grow."
While rapper TI is scheduled to perform at the Durban Botanical Gardens tonight, the municipality says some of the proposed events have not been approved.
But it says the events are a means to boost the image and the economy of the city.
