CAPE TOWN - Afriforum Youth is taking Stellenbosch University to court today to force the institution to keep Afrikaans as a medium of instruction.

The organisation claims Afrikaans-speaking students have been disadvantaged in some faculties because lectures are now being taught in English, despite assurances from the university that both languages would share equal status.

Afriforum Youth has filed an urgent application in the Western Cape High Court.

It claims agreements that were reached last month have not been implemented.

The organisation's Hein Gonzales said, "What actually happens on the ground is that Afrikaans is being taken away out of the Law Faculty and other faculties as well and they're not getting tertiary education in Afrikaans as stated in the language policy."
