AfriForum secures court order against Maties
The court order compels Maties to ensure Afrikaans-speaking students are taught in their mother-tongue.
CAPE TOWN - AfriForum Youth has secured a Western Cape High Court order against Stellenbosch University, compelling the institution to ensure Afrikaans-speaking students are taught in their mother-tongue.
The organisation argued in court on Friday that the university had breached an agreement reached between the two parties over the implementation of the institution's language policy.
AfriForum Youth complained that certain faculties were only offering lectures in English, despite assurances that both languages would share equal status.
The university did not oppose the application, conceding it had deviated from the language policy with reference to an estimated 268 modules.
Spokesperson Hein Gonzales said, "The due date for university to implement that is 29 March 2016. Afrikaans must be back or else we can come to court with an application for contempt of court."
