CAPE TOWN - Stellenbosch University management said it will assist police in their investigation into the rape of a female student outside a residence.

The woman was attacked last month and no arrests have been made at this stage.

The university's Martin Viljoen said it's believed the rapist is not a student.

"Professor Wim de Villiers, rector and vice-chancellor has expressed his utter dismay at this incident and he said that sexual abuses of this nature are very despicable acts and urged the police to make sure that the incident is thoroughly investigated.

"And the university has pledged full support to the Saps investigation."
