Mashaba names squad for Afcon qualifier

The first leg will be played on 26 March in Lime, Cameroon and the return leg in Durban on 29 March.

CAPE TOWN - Bafana Bafana coach Shakes Mashaba has named a 25 man squad for their two legged AFCON 2017 qualifiers against Cameroon.

The squad will be whittled down 20 before they take on the Indomitable Lions.

The first leg will be played on 26 March in Lime, Cameroon with the return leg in Durban on 29 March at the Moses Mabhida.

Mashaba said he has selected a squad purely on merit and has said some young players were not considered as they are preparing for Olympics.

Cheslyn Jampies, Sifiso Hlanti and William Twala are the new players in the squad with keepers Darren Keet and Ithumeleng Khune making a return.

South Africa are in Group M alongside Cameroon, Gambia and Mauritania.

The Cameroonians lead the Group and are followed by Mauritania on three points whilst Gambia and Bafana are stuck on one point.

Host Gabon have automatically qualified for the 16 man tournament, Group winners will qualify for the tournament as well as the two best placed runners up.

Full Squad:

Goalkeepers: Itumeleng Khune, Jackson Mabokgwane and Darren Keet.

Defenders: Siyabonga Nhlapo, Asavela Mbekile, Anele Ngcongca, Thabo Matlaba, Cheslyn Jampies, Erick Mathoho, Sifiso Hlanti, Rivaldo Coetzee and Thulani Hlatshwayo.

Midfielders: Andile Jali, Kamohelo Mokotjo, Thulani Serero, Themba Zwane, William Twala, Jabulani Shongwe, Mpho Makola, Mandla Masango and Hlompho Kekana.

Strikers: Thamsanqa Gabuza, Prince Nxumalo, Tokelo Rantie and Dino Ndlovu.
