CT road closures may affect voter registration
The main road between Muizenberg and Simon’s Town will be closed to motorists today.
CAPE TOWN - The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) is concerned that road closures along part of Cape Town's southern suburbs may hamper voter registration efforts.
The main road between Muizenberg and Simon's Town will be closed to motorists today for the Cape Town Cycle Tour.
Western Cape Electoral Officer Courtney Sampson says while access issues have been top of the IEC's agenda, some southern suburbs residents will inevitably be affected by today's cycle tour.
"We have met with the organisers of the cycle tour as well as the City of Cape Town. The road closures will obviously affect some people's access."
One party agent outside a registration station in St James believes the majority of locals however are already on the voters' roll.
"It's going to be quite hectic for the IEC not so much the voters in this area. The traditional voter in this area is older."
Despite the apparent logistical difficulties, officials remain confident roads will reopen before this afternoon's registration cut off time.
