Convicted murderer Donald Sebolai ‘shocked’ by his 20-year sentence

He was found guilty of killing Dolly Tshabalala and defeating the ends of justice.

JOHANNESBURG - Convicted murderer Donald Sebolai says he is shocked by the High Court in Pretoria's decision to sentence him to an effective 20 years in prison for killing his girlfriend.

He was found guilty of killing Dolly Tshabalala and defeating the ends of justice.

He was convicted of defeating the ends of justice after going on the run for over a week after the crime, with the court finding he had cleaned the blood stained floor and removed the murder weapon from the scene.

The former DJ maintains he is innocent and that Tshabalala stabbed herself.

"I did not take the knife and stab her, it was a fight and I was trying to disarm the deceased. It's the truth."

But Judge Cassim Moosa says Sebolai is a violent and abusive man who deserves the harsh sentence.

Moosa also says the sentence is appropriate and that he hopes this will deter other offenders from gender based violence.

He added that a minimum sentence of 15 years would not be sufficient and based on the high level of gender based violence in the country, this sentence would aim to deter others from committing the same offence.

The judge also reflected on evidence submitted by gender violence expert, Professor Rachel Dukes, during the sentencing.

According to Dukes, women were six times more likely to die at the hands of a male partner.

'SEBOLAI IS A COWARD'

Judge Moosa has labelled the former DJ a coward and an abusive man.

The judge says it is important that the court plays its part in ending gender-based violence.

"Domestic violence has become a scourge in our society and should not be treated lightly. The level of violence in our society has reached dangerously alarming proportions especially in respect of women and children."

Soon after Moosa handed down the sentence, family and friends of Tshabalala began celebrating shouting "hashtag Donald Duck has fallen."

Friends say they will now celebrate today's outcome with a private gathering.

TSHABALALA'S MOTHER NOT HAPPY

Tshabalala's mother says she is not satisfied with the effective 20-year sentence handed down to her daughter's killer and says she has nothing to celebrate.

Dikeledi Marawa says the sentence handed down by Judge Moosa is not sufficient as she was hoping for a much harsher verdict.

Tshabalala's friends are, however, pleased with the outcome saying the former radio DJ has finally received what he deserves.

The judge says it is clear Sebolai wanted Tshabalala to die; refusing to take her to hospital after he stabbed her.
