AngloGold, Anglo American to compensate silicosis claims
Reports say the settlement totals R464 million and will be put into an independent trust.
JOHANNESBURG - Anglo American and AngloGold Ashanti have reached an agreement to compensate nearly 4,400 silicosis claims.
Business Day Live is reporting that the settlement totals R464 million that will be put into an independent trust.
The lawsuit centred on Anglo American and former subsidiary AngloGold over silicosis, which was contracted while working underground.
Thousands of miners became ill and in 2012 sued for compensation.
Bdlive is reporting that the settlement is completely separate from the silicosis class-action proceedings awaiting a high court decision on the way forward.
Anglo American SA is also one of 32 companies involved in that case.
But with the latest agreement, Anglo American and AngloGold Ashanti say the stand-alone cases have now been fully resolved.
Lawyers for the companies will fund the trust as well medical evaluations for those seeking compensation.
