Man (23) charged with Shamonique Claasen's murder
The accused was initially taken in for questioning after her body was found on Monday.
CAPE TOWN - Police have confirmed a 23-year-old man has been formally charged with the murder of a 10-year-old girl in Paarl.
The accused, who is Shamonique Claasen's sister's boyfriend, was initially taken in for questioning after her body was found on Monday.
The girl, who went missing on Saturday, a day before her 11th birthday, lived with her parents in a backyard dwelling on the same premises.
The Police's Frederick van Wyk said the accused will today appear in court for allegedly killing Shamonique.
The Paarl community has been shocked by the young girl's death and held a Candlelight vigil in memory of Shamonique last night.
A memorial service will also be held at Dalweide Primary School this evening. Claasen was a grade 5 learner at the school.
Her family say they are too distraught to talk about their daughter's death and funeral arrangements are yet to be made.
