Lily Mine completes emergency escape route drilling
The team is expected to report back to those affected with readings around the stability of the ground.
JOHANNESBURG - Management at the Lily Mine have now confirmed that drilling of an emergency escape route has been completed and declared safe.
A small team of experts are now combing the scene underground - assessing the safety of the mine - where Pretty Nkambule, Solomon Nyerende and Yvonne Mnisi have been trapped in a container since last month.
The team is expected to report back to the Department of Mineral Resources, Amcu and the families of the trio, with readings around the stability of the ground, and structures around the rockfall before the search and rescue operation can continue.
Spokesperson Coetzee Zietsman said, "We have to make sure that if we send someone down there that they are absolutely safe and we don't end up with another tragedy."
