eThekwini Municipality slammed for planned alleged ‘conference at sea’
It’s reported the ‘conference at sea’ is due to take place this weekend and will cost R160,000.
JOHANNESBURG - The African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) in eThekwini has criticised the local municipality, saying it's planning to take 40 councillors on a boat cruise.
It's being reported the "conference at sea" is due to take place this weekend and will reportedly cost R160,000 of taxpayers money.
It's understood the trip to the Portuguese islands, just off the coast of Mozambique, was organised by the eThekwini Maritime Cluster, the municipality and Tourism KZN.
The youth league says the excursion is reckless, following calls for austerity by both Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan and President Jacob Zuma.
Provincial secretary Thanduxolo Sabelo said, "Opulence in the midst of poverty like this cannot be accepted, especially at the cost of taxpayers. They need to redirect that money to be used for youth development and especially in institutions of higher learning where we are having a crisis."
However, eThekwini Mayor James Nxumalo says the reports around the so called "conference at sea" are not true.
