Truck torched by protesting residents near George Goch
It’s understood the protest was sparked by the incorporation of their hostels into a different ward.
JOHANNESBURG - Johannesburg Metro Police say hostel residents in Jeppe and Denver near George Goch have set a truck alight during an early morning protest.
They say the protest was sparked by the incorporation of the hostels into a different ward, ahead of the local government elections.
The residents have been blocking Main Reef Road with passing motorists also being pelted with stones.
Police have confirmed rubber bullets have been used to disperse the crowd.
JMPD Spokesperson Edna Mamonyane said, "Metro police and police had to blockade the roads so that no traffic would move through that area. At this stage, Saps and the Joburg Metro Police are on scene. We used rubber bullets to disperse the crowds so we have our hands full."
