JOHANNESBURG - There's a high police presence near the George Goch hostel near Denver informal settlement, south of Johannesburg, where residents have set alight two vehicles during early morning protests.

Residents are protesting over the incorporation of the hostels into a different ward, ahead of the local government elections.

Angry protesters have blockaded Main Reef Road and other roads with rocks and burning tyres.

Residents attend protesting at around 3am this morning and torched a vehicle and a truck.

They are angry because they were not consulted about the hostels' demarcation.

Earlier, police had to use rubber bullets to disperse the crowd.

Motorists who tried to enter the area have been diverted by officers for their own safety.

Dozens of officers have been deployed to the area.
