JOHANNESBURG - Over 500 Wits students and academics have signed a petition raising awareness about the alleged sexual and verbal harassment of students by private security guards during protests.

A fourth year Wits student, who gave permission to be recorded, says she was verbally abused by private security when she was at the Wits administration block reporting for campus radio.

"That day, I was wearing a dress and the men were going on and on."

Wits gender equity director Jackie Dugard says there have been no incidents reported so far, and she's encouraged students to come forward with any complaints.

"We are trying by all means to encourage people to come forward to us, even it's just to talk. We don't expect people to fully have evidence all the evidence behind them; it is our job to investigate."
