CAPE TOWN - NGO Operation Hydrate has so far distributed more than 9 million litres of drinking water across the country.

The initiative was launched in early January in response to the drought.

Operation Hydrate's Yusuf Abramjee will later today launch a water collection drive in the Mother City, in partnership with the Desmond and Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation.

"Our mission is to deliver drinking water to communities in need. We've been very active in at least five provinces so far. We have about 1,500 volunteers distributing water, we've companies and members of the public donating water. We've companies who're so generous that they give us their trucks at no charge."
