EERSTE RIVER - Constable Ben Koopman has been laid to rest at the Welmoed graveyard in Eerste River.

Community members and metro police officers were at the funeral today to support Koopman's wife, Katrina, and three children.

Weeping family members held each other as they stood around the 53-year-old's grave site.

Loyal, kind hearted and respected are just some of the words colleagues used to describe 'Oom Ben' as he was affectionately known.

The school hall was packed to capacity as family, community members and former colleagues pay their respects to the late Constable, with the street in front of Eerste River High school cordoned off.

A guard of honor was held for Koopman who was gunned down in the neighbourhood earlier this month.
