Police monitor volatile Parkwood after evictions
Violence erupted after residents tried to stop authorities from tearing down illegally built structures.
CAPE TOWN - Police say they'll keep a watchful eye on Parkwood where officers and residents clashed in running battles.
Several people were hit with rubber bullets and police also lobbed stun grenades yesterday.
The violence erupted after the community tried to stop law enforcement officials from tearing down illegally built structures.
The streets were littered with stones and other objects, evidence of defiant protestors determined to drive out law enforcement officers and police.
But authorities used force and several people, including a six-year-old boy and a 70-year-old woman were struck by rubber bullets.
Others found themselves in the midst of tear gas.
Residents whose shacks were torn down, are adamant they'll rebuild saying they have nowhere else to go.
