'Klipspruit power cut due to cable theft'
Residents have taken to streets after being without electricity since yesterday afternoon.
JOHANNESBURG - City Power says the outage in Klipspruit West, in Soweto, which has led to protests in the area, is due to cable theft.
Tensions are running high in the community, where residents have been stoning passing cars, and looting vehicles delivering goods to shops in the area.
They say they've been without electricity since yesterday afternoon, with no explanation.
The police are investigating cases of theft and damage to property.
City Power's Yumna Sheik says cable theft is an ongoing problem in the area, and technicians are sometimes prevented from accessing the area to fix the problem.
"We have also had a problem with contractors and staff entering the area to work or to effect repairs because residents have been blocking entrances. We've been accompanied by police."
One man says his home and business have been affected by two weeks of ongoing power cuts.
"Either they are servicing the lines or the electricity cables have been stolen; they are giving the worst excuses. They don't tell us what is happening."
