AfriForum tried to block students from holding a meeting regarding the institution's language policy.
Classes at the Hatfield campus have been cancelled for the day.
Students say they will be drafting a memorandum of their grievances to be submitted to the university's vice chancellor, which includes calls for Afrikaans to be scrapped as a medium of instruction.
