JOHANNESBURG - There are reports this morning that National Assembly Speaker Baleka Mbete's lawyer in the Nkandla matter, Lindi Nkosi-Thomas, was the subject of a criminal investigation when she was a non-executive director of the South African Airways (SAA) board.

According to News 24, the Public Protector's office was asked by SAA to halt its investigation into Nkosi-Thomas, pending a fraud case against her that was the subject of a police investigation.

The Public Protector was reportedly investigating complaints that Nkosi-Thomas allegedly doctored a legal opinion during her tenure at the SAA board.

Recently Nkosi-Thomas made controversial submissions at the Constitutional Court when defending Mbete during the Nkandla case.

In a quote, Nkosi-Thomas acknowledged the investigation, but argued that the matter was laid to rest.

It's understood the criminal matter relates to an incident that occurred in 2013, when a man lodged a complaint of unprofessional conduct against Nkosi-Thomas at the Johannesburg Bar Council.
