CAPE TOWN - The City of Cape Town is offering a R50,000 reward for any information leading to the arrest of two men who killed a metro police officer in front of his Eerste River home.

The duo fled the scene with Constable Ben Koopman's service pistol and hand radio.

One community member who arrived on the scene at the same time as police said, "There was a man lying on the ground and we saw it was a Metro Police officer. We were standing there until the ambulance finished with him and now we're scared because we don't know where the suspects are. They might be standing among us."

The officer is mourned by his wife and three children.

At the same time, the city's Robbie Roberts said it appears Koopman may have been targeted.

The 53-year-old officer was part of the Metro Police service for 14 years.

Roberts said the duo may have been monitoring him.

"Looking at the circumstances, it seems as if he was monitored for a period of time because they followed up on his movements that lead to the robbery and murder."
