CAPE TOWN - A fire in the Masiphumelele informal settlement has been brought under control, but not before the blaze razed several structures.

The extent of the damage caused by the fire, which broke out this afternoon, has not yet been assessed and its cause is not known at this stage.

Fire and Rescue's Liesl Moodie says operations to distinguish the fire are continuing.

"We currently have 14 vehicles present. The fire is contained and at this stage we still have helicopters in operation with the bombing and assisting fire fighters."
