CAPE TOWN - The newly appointed Western Cape police commissioner says he will be placing greater focus on gang violence.

Yesterday, Lieutenant-General Khombinkosi Jula joined police officers on anti-crime raids.

The action was part of Operation Lockdown.

Jula says he will crackdown on gang violence.

"Where it is clear that there are established structures and leaders that are behind gangsterism. We'll ensure that those structures are disintegrated."

Jula says operations specifically targeting suspected gangsters and drug dealers have been successful in several areas.

"On Monday alone, we arrested 68 wanted suspects. The other arrests that we've achieved so far are 1,894 arrests for various crimes."

The arrests are from operations conducted since last Friday.

Jula says these operations will gain momentum with a dedicated and specific focus on gang violence.

Jula has about 30 years' experience in the police service.
