CAPE TOWN - The Democratic Alliance (DA) has suspended George Mayor Charles Standers pending an internal disciplinary process.

Standers is alleged to have assaulted his wife earlier this week.

At the same time, Beaufort West Mayor Truman Prince may also find himself suspended by the end of today.

Prince is alleged to have attempted to manipulate tenders to fund the African National Congress(ANC)'s election campaign.

He is also accused of assaulting a female police officer.

DA spokesperson Jaco Londt says Standers has been relieved of his duties for now.

"The DA's federal executive has taken a decision to suspend Mayor Standers from all party activities."

His wife laid a domestic violence charge against him this week, prompting the party to take action.

Meanwhile, the ANC's Jabu Mfusi says Prince should know his fate later today.

Mfusi says Prince has brought the party into disrepute.

"This Prince matter is a very, very serious matter."

Prince has denied any wrongdoing.
