WATTVILLE - Residents of Wattville have accused law enforcement of trying to chase them away as they desperately attempted to save three people on board a light aircraft that crashed near Benoni.

An Austrian couple and their pilot died when the plane they were flying in crashed shortly after take-off from Brakpan Airport yesterday.

Residents were first on the scene and say they managed to extinguish the blaze using buckets of water.

Women near the crash scene rushed to the burning wreckage, carrying buckets of water while the men tried to pull the three people out of the plane.

Sipho Maphanga says the Austrian woman was still alive when he dragged her out of the aircraft and police and Metro Police simply stood by and watched.

"The police were scared to come to help us. They were just standing there, not helping us. Then they started to come toward us and chased us away, shouting 'Go, go, go, go!'"

One man says he was scared to approach the wreckage, but knew he had to try to save their lives.

"In my heart I knew I had to go and try to save their lives, because if it were me or another guy…"

The couple were on their way to a lodge in Limpopo and their identities have not yet been made public.
