JOHANNESBURG - Paramedics confirmed the death of three people following a plane crash in Benoni.

The light aircraft went down earlier today in a park in Wattville.

Ekurhuleni Mayor Mondli Gungubele said the pilot was flying an elderly Austrian couple to a lodge in Limpopo when he crashed into a pole and the light aircraft burst into flames.

Gungubele added further investigations were being carried out.

ER24 spokesman Russel Meiring said, "Unfortunately, all three occupants had already succumbed to their fatal injuries prior to the arrival of the emergency services. Local authorities are on scene for further investigation."

Officials from the Civil Aviation Authority and pathologists were on scene to investigate the circumstances around the crash.

Pathologists removed the three bodies from the scene, while the Civil Aviation Authority launched an investigation.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the pilot lost control of the plane.

The area was cordoned off where a large crowd of people had gathered, who said they were shocked that the deadly plane crash happened so close to a school.

Some residents said they tried to extinguish the blaze with buckets of water.
