Eskom mum over Gupta-owned coal bidding company
The power utility says it won’t reveal any potential bidders looking to fill contracts as coal suppliers.
JOHANNESBURG - Eskom says it will not reveal any potential bidders looking to fill contracts as coal suppliers until the final announcement in March, adding that Optimum Coal Mine is only one of seven interim suppliers.
This comes amid the controversy surrounding Eskom's cancellation of a contract with Exxaro and the subsequent interim appointment of suppliers including Gupta-owned mining company, Optimum.
Yesterday, trade union Solidarity said 1,700 Exxaro Mine employees could lose their jobs because of government's dealings with the Gupta family, claiming Optimum will get the permanent contract.
Eskom's Khulu Phasiwe says, "We do not actively go out to the media and say who has applied. But if those companies feel strongly and go out and say they have applied, then that's their choice. From our side, it's a business decision not to mention anyone at this stage."
