JOHANNESBURG - A fundraising campaign to raise R10 million to pay off student debt has started with a donation of R2 million.

The first donation was made by Nedbank following the launch of the initiative at Wits University at the weekend.

The SRC's campaign has been endorsed by Vice-Chancellor Adam Habib and is aimed at paying for the debt of students who are not covered by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS).

The launch was addressed by SRC President Nompendulo Mkhatshwa, who called on other private sector companies to make similar contributions.

"We're calling all the stakeholder society, faith based organisations and the entertainment industry; singers and actors, let's do something. Let's do something guys, we want R10 million."
