Tshwane mayor tackles claims the municipality misspent R4bn
The DA says a leaked and unsigned report shows that the money was wasted.
JOHANNESBURG - Tshwane Mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa says his office won't respond to unfounded claims that his municipality misspent R4 billion during the procurement of the installation of smart meters.
The municipality received an unqualified audit from the Auditor General but the Democratic Alliance says a leaked and unsigned report shows that the money was wasted.
Ramokgopa, however, says the municipality did spend R1.5 billion on a contract for smart meters, which was later cancelled.
He says the money was not wasted as the product installed by the company still belongs to the city.
He says the Auditor General's complaint relates to the process.
"Indeed there are good services that have been procured and the process we followed is not consistent with the provisions of procurement and that is what the Auditor General called irregular."
