JOHANNESBURG - The Mpumalanga provincial government has confirmed that the province's Premier David Mabuza was off work for three months because he was poisoned.

This morning The Sowetan quoted Mabuza as saying he had fallen ill after eating something at a children's party.

The premier's spokesperson Zibonele Mncwango says he started to feel ill in August last year when he went to a children's party.

"After that celebration, he became ill and he was on sick leave which took almost three months and he returned to work in October last year."

But Mpumalanga Democratic Alliance leader James Masango says this stories don't add up.

"We really don't know the truth about this because [an ANC spokesperson] told us Mabuza was tired because he was working hard and said he was resting."

Two years ago former ANC Treasurer Mathews Phosa claimed Mabuza had been a spy for the apartheid government.
