JOHANNESBURG - Eight children and a man have been rushed to hospital in a critical condition after being stung by a swarm of bees on Jones Road in Benoni.

It's understood the group was travelling in a taxi on the east rand this afternoon when the swarm came through the windows and started stinging them.

Netcare 911's Chris Botha says people need to be extra vigilant, as bees are known to travel between hives during summer.

"You will normally see them as a dark cloud in the sky and sometimes, if you hear them, it's quite a noise that they make when they move. If you see them and you're in a car, just close your windows."
