Davos: Hefty price tag for WEF delegates from SA
With the rand plunging to an all-time low, it's going to cost about more for South Africans going to Davos.
JOHANNESBURG - There's a hefty price tag for delegates attending this year's World Economic Forum in Davos, which could cost anything up to R500,000 per individual.
There are about 80 delegates from South Africa attending this year, from government, business and non-government organisations.
With the rand plunging to an all-time low, it's going to cost about 40 percent more for individuals going to Davos this year compared to last year.
Businessman Martyn Davies says he's travelled overseas dozens of times and for those attending this year, it will be more expensive.
"For one individual to go, and talking at very high inflation, hotel rates, restaurant costs, travel and flight cost and of course your attendance ticket, you're looking at R500,000 to R600,000."
However Davies says there are several advantages in going to the World Economic Forum.
The annual meeting kicks off on Wednesday.
