PRETORIA - Police management says former Gauteng provincial commissioner Lesetja Mothiba's expertise and experience make him the ideal candidate to lead the so-called 'Back-to-Basics' campaign with the service.

Acting National Police Commissioner Kgomotso Phahlane announced the plan last year, which seeks to re-invigorate the core responsibilities of the police.

The police's Hangwani Mulaudzi says Mothiba has been appointed as head of the newly created Management Intervention Unit.

"The commissioner has committed to taking police back to basics because of his experience within the SAPS."

He says Soweto's cluster commander, Major General Eric Nkuna will act as provincial commissioner.

He says Nkuna has the required experience and policing knowledge to lead the province.
