Soweto's cluster commander, Major General Eric Nkuna, has been appointed as acting provincial commissioner.

Mothiba was appointed as the province's commissioner in 2014.He was in the role in an acting capacity after previous commissioner, Bethuel Mondi Zuma, was fired.

The police's Hangwani Mulaudzi says Mothiba is now in charge of the newly created management intervention unit at the national head office where he will be responsible for assessing the performance of the SAPS as discussed in Parliament last year.

Mulaudzi says Nkuna is a seasoned officer within Soweto.

" We are hoping he will continue where General Mothiba left off in making sure that Gauteng stays stable."
