CAPE TOWN - The Umkhonto Wesizwe Military Veterans Association says it believes sinister forces are behind a sexual assault claim involving Western Cape African National Congress (ANC) leader Marius Fransman.

The association has come out in support of Fransman.

It has questioned the timing of the allegations made against him.

Fransman has been accused of touching his 20-year-old personal assistant inappropriately during a trip to Rustenberg last week.

The association's provincial secretary Thuso Mkabile says while the law must take its course, the timing of the allegations is suspicious.

"We believe that this has been a calculated move because in the first place, it happens on the day that the ANC is celebrating 104 years of its existence."

The association adds Fransman can't be suspended because he's not been formally charged.
