PRETORIA - Gauteng police say they've detained nearly 300 people, most of whom are believed to be foreigners, following public violence at the Marabastad Home Affairs office today.

The police were called when the angry crowd allegedly started stoning passing vehicles.

The streets around the department were closed for about an hour but have since been re-opened.

The police's Tsekiso Mofokeng says an altercation started inside the Home Affairs offices before spilling into the street.

"There was public unrest at Home Affairs and the police were called in to sterilise the situation."

He says police are processing and verifying the documents of people detained.

"Around 287 people have been taken in and that includes the 100 that damaged State property."

Home Affairs has not yet responded to questions.
