CAPE TOWN - Western Cape Traffic Chief Kenny Africa has expressed disappointment by the high death rate on the province's roads over the festive season.

This past weekend saw an influx of motorists on the province's roads as families returned from various holiday destinations.

Sixteen deaths were recorded, of which at least five were pedestrians.

For the month of December 2015, 143 people died on the provinces roads.

During December 2014, 120 people lost their lives.

Africa says, "Now in January, we're already far over the statistics of January 2015. And that's way over last year's numbers."
